My 2017 Movie Soundtrack Playlist

"I want to write and feel the drama. Music is essentially an emotional language, so you want to feel something from the relationships and build music based on those feelings" - Howard Shore

Every December I take a look back at the year that was and cherry pick some musical highlights, whether they be soaring orchestral scores or licensed tracks that have been inserted into films to great effect.

This year has been a really excellent year for movies and arguably an even better year for movie music.

From Creedence Clearwater Revival (Kong: Skull Island, Free Fire) and Fleetwood Mac (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.) to Gang of Youths (Justice League) and Childish Gambino (Get Out), there has been no shortage of awesome needle drops in movies this year. I've included a host of my favourites in the playlist, including a couple of tracks from TV shows like Stranger Things and Riverdale. Of course, the biggest soundtrack of the year belonged to Edgar Wright's Baby Driver; I've plucked a handful of the most noteworthy songs from that mixtape also.

Some of my favourite original scores include Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch's thumping and intoxicating synth for Blade Runner 2049, John Williams' excellent score in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rupert Gregson-Williams' classic superhero motifs and pounding jungle drums in Wonder Woman and Jed Kurzel's haunting sounds on Alien: Covenant.

I've compiled all my picks in this handy little Spotify playlist for you to zip through and enjoy. Let me know in the comments what you favourite 2017 film soundtracks are!
